An interactive talk with Stephen Karcher PhD

I Ching, the ancient Classic of Change, is a book, a divinatory technique and a spiritual practice or “way” treasured for thousands of years as a method of connecting to the ever-flowing stream of the Way or Dao. We will explore the history, mystery and Way of the I Ching and end with a live divination.

Stephen Karcher, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized scholar, translator and initiated diviner, teaching and lecturing on the Yijing and other divination systems for over 30 years in the US, Great Britain, France, Spain, Switzerland and South Africa. He “liberates meanings … that have been missing from our understanding for a couple of thousand years … revealing a whole new landscape of interpretation that makes previous translations feel cramped by comparison.”

In this seminar, we will learn to use the I Ching to open an interactive space between where insight is born and where individual change occurs. This is a transformation of what the old Chinese sages called the heart-mind that dissolves fixed thought-patterns and promotes imaginative mobility. We will begin with making a question, exploring the techniques of turning a problem into the basis of a dialog. Next we will examine the hexagrams, trigrams and lines; and how they are produced and how they can be arranged into a Reading Layout. Finally we will discuss the choreographies of reading the answer and the circles of meaning through which change can speak to us.
